Qui is so caring :) in the book he gives food capsules to Shmi so as not to impose. In the movie you see him reacing into his poncho -
that's what he was doing and knowing Qui-Gon, I guessed that even before I read the book. The Force is strong with me! ;)
I believe Qui~Gon truly cared for Shmi
