A KNIGHT IN A SHINING BLACK PONTIAC
"Any
sign of them?"
"Nothing
yet, Michael."
They drove around for the better part of an hour
...
"Kitt,
can you pull into that diner over there, I'm starving."
"Sure
Michael."
"I
promise I'll get you a filler up."
"Thanks,
I am running a tad low on Liquid Hydrogen."
KITT pulled into the service station.
Michael filled him up, then KITT continued on to the diner at the side of
the station, scanners peeled as he wound down his window.
"What'll
it be?"
"One
burger with the works, no chilli and a bottle of coke."
"Sure,
comin' right up. Joe!
One with the works, hold the chilli!"
In a few moments the concoction was ready.
"Thanks,"
Michael said, taking his burger and coke.
"Would
you like our house special with that?"
"What's
that?" Knight asked, curious.
"Roast
Pontiacs."
"What!?"
KITT exclaimed, followed by Michael.
Knight's curiosity got the better of him.
"What are they?"
"They're-"
"No,"
Kitt said, rather curt. "We
don't want any."
Michael smiled. "My partner," he said.
"He's vegetarian."
Michael drove on.
"But
they're mini potatoes," the woman called out, though KITT still wans't
interested.
Michael could barely contain his smile, but he'd
a feeling KITT would never speak to him again if he ordered any.
"Still
no sign of them, Michael ... Don't you spill that mayo on me, or whatever lethal
concoction they use."
Michael smiled. "Relax, KITT. There's
an art to eating these."
"Obviously."
Michael finished his burger, then took a swig of
his coke and swallowed.
"I
know ... I know ... It'll rot my liver..."
"I
didn't say a thing," KITT said, "although fruit juice would have been
the better option."
Michael finished his coke and threw the empty
bottle and burger wrapper in a bin as he and KITT drove past.
"Sushi
also would have been a much healthier choice, Michael,"
KITT said, as they drove past a Sushi Bar.
"I'm
sure it is."
"Bonnie's
very fond of it. Both the fish and
vegetable varieties."
"She
is?"
"Mmm
hmm."
"Well
Kitt, if you had taste buds, you'd finally understand the lure of burgers."
"I'm
sure."
"Heh,
Buddy, thanks for caring."
"Not
that you take my advice, but my pleasure. Head
for home, Michael?"
Michael Knight nodded and sighed.
"Roast
Pontiacs indeed," KITT scoffed.
Knight smiled.
"Michael,
wait ... I'm picking up something. Two
men matching the men we chased ..."
"Get
on them, KITT."
"You
don't have to tell me twice."
"We
gotta find out where they're keeping Leia's sister."
Leia had come to FLAG seeking their assistance.
She's been hounded By Gerald Crain, an industrial entrepreneur, owner of
Fire Tech Industries, for a secret formula given to Leia by her father, James,
the former owner. Gerald had been
his most trusted advisor, but James had not been totally ignorant of Gerald's
ambitions and for insurance, had given the secret formula to his daughter, the
only existing vial.
KITT slowed a tad, keeping his sensors peeled.
"You
looking forward to relaxing after a hard days work, buddy?"
"I
don't need to relax, Michael, but I could do with a sensor alignment."
"That's
relaxing?"
"The
way Bonnie does it. Bliss."
Michael chuckled. "I gotta ask her to try that on me sometime."
"Michael
... There they are!" KITT
exclaimed suddenly, as he saw two men hotfooting it down the adjacent footpath
and sped in pursuit.
"We
gotta get rid of that car!" one of them hissed.
KITT picked up speed, then suddenly screeched to
a stop.
"Kitt?!"
"One
of them just threw a kitten onto the road," KITT said quickly.
Michael watched the two men flee, but regarding
the shock in KITT's voice, he attended to his friend first.
"Do
you think you-" he started to say.
"I
don't know." //I don't want to know.//
"I hope not, but..." KITT didn't want to admit he had felt a
slight bump, but he couldn't even bring himself to even think about it, let
alone use his scanner.
"I'll
... take a look," Michael said, although he wasn't very hopeful, he felt he
had to for KITT's sake, but what could he tell his friend?
KITT would detect a lie a mile off and the truth would make him feel
worse. Michael took a deep breath,
walked around to KITT's left side and knelt down.
"Kitt
..."
"Michael
... I ..."
"I'm
afraid there's no hope for..."
"Oh
no ..."
"The
pack of candy you ran over. The
kitten on the other hand's a little shaken, but fine."
"Michael,
if there's a God, I think believe in him. Thank
Goodness ..." His voice conveyed his relief.
"God
had nothing to do with it. It's
your breaks you should thank. You
stopped a few millimetres away from his tail."
"Bonnie
is a Goddess. Bring it
inside."
Knight gently picked up the tiny black furball
in one hand. KITT opened his door
and Michael placed him on the passenger seat.
KITT scanned the animal's vitals.
"She's
perfectly healthy, apart from the awful shock. Michael, how could anyone be so
cruel? Some human behaviour I'll
never understand."
"Neither
will I, Buddy," Michael said as he climbed inside KITT.
"Ohh
you poor thing ... " KITT said to his frightened, shivering passenger.
"You're safe now. Michael,
no rock music. You'll scare the
life out of her."
Knight smiled.
"Aren't you happy she's aboard?"
Michael could swear he saw his automotive friend
smile.
KITT drove back to the FLAG, being careful not
to startle his furry passenger.
Michael climbed out of KITT and greeted Bonnie.
"Glad
to see you're both back safely," she said with a smile.
"And
we picked up a passenger," KITT said, opening his door.
"Ohh..."
Bonnie gasped. "You're so
cuuuute ... You poor thing..."
"One
of the creeps we were chasing threw her out onto the road," KITT said.
"That's
awful!" Bonnie exclaimed, reaching inside and picking up the kitten, whom
mewed.
Michael peered inside KITT.
"Uhh,
Kitt ... I hate to say this, but..."
"The
kitten wet on my seat, I know. Poor baby was so scared."
Michael smiled. "And you're not mad?"
"Bonnie's
vaccu suction/sterilization unit will clean the mess."
Michael smiled. On various occasions KITT had been terrified of animals
messing inside him.
"Kitt,
I think you like this furball."
"What
makes you say that?"
The Trans-Am's redlight scanner tracked back and
forth, almost like a smile.
Bonnie had him cleaned in no time.
"There you go, Kitt, good as new."
"Thank
you, Bonnie. I think I'm going to
call her Pousca."
"What
do you mean call her?" Devon asked, coming to them, with Leia.
"Well
we can't exactly put her back where we found her, Devon."
There was a pause before the older man spoke.
"All
right ..." he gave in, "but Michael, you're responsible."
"How'd
I get myself into these messes?" He
smiled and shook his head.
"Thank
you, Michael," KITT said.
"You
owe me, Partner."
Bonnie smiled and Pousca mewed.
"I'm
sorry, I lost them Leia," KITT said.
Although upset, she felt she couldn't be angry.
"It's not your fault. From
what Devon's told me about you, you'd have been devastated if the kitten got
hurt..."
"Thank
you, for understanding. We will
find Eleanor."
Leia heard the promise in KITT's words and felt
for the black car as she stroked the kitten him gently as Bonnie held her.
"Bonnie,
can you look after Pousca while I'm away?"
"Sure,
Kitt. We've some milk in the
fridge. Don't worry Devon, there's
enough for your tea."
The elder man smiled. "As long as she doesn't expect any of my Scottish smoked
Salmon."
Bonnie smiled as she took Pousca to the kitchen
unit, as KITT and Michael pulled out if the Mobile Unit, with Leia in the
passenger seat.
"You
all right?" Michael asked her.
"I'm
worried about Eleanor ... Until that creep's behind bars..."
"I
know how you feel," Knight said, dismissing KITT's earlier misgivings on
their female passenger.
He seemed to think she was hiding something and
that Michael should look past her pretty face.
It wouldn't be the first time he'd been duped by a pretty woman.
He wanted to dismiss KITT's suspicions, but the 'ol Pontiac had been
right before and Michael reluctantly kept a close eye on Leia - not just her
pretty face.
"Michael
..." Leia began, as if reading their misgivings, "there's something I
have to tell you ... and KITT."
Here it comes, or at least part of it ... Michael thought.
"Eleanor
... She's not my sister. She's my
friend."
"Friend?
Why didn't you say? Is she
in some sort of legal trouble?"
Leia shook her head. "I didn't think FLAG would be as inclined to
help..."
"What
made you think that?"
Leia shook her head. "I'm sorry ..."
"It's
all right," Knight said, sympathetically. "I
know you're scared and that's okay."
He suspected there was more, but he didn't want
to push her.
"A
friend can be as close or even closer than family," KITT said, feeling he
should give her some support. Her
deception had been motivated from fear, not malevolence.
"FLAG wouldn't have discriminated."
Leia managed a smile. "Thanks, Kitt."
"You
and Eleanor close?" Michael asked.
Leia nodded with a warm smile.
"Known
each other long?"
"Seven
years."
Michael smiled. "It's wonderful to have a friend like that."
He patted KITT's dash.
"Thank
you, Michael. The feeling's
mutual."
Michael decided to trust Leia, however still
sure she was hiding something, but he had the feeling she would tell him when
the time was right.

"So,
did it work?" Crain asked.
"Well,
not the way you planned," Sid said. "The
car didn't kill the cat. It stopped
just in time."
"Damn!"
"It
kinda worked though. We lost
it."
"The
whole plan was to get the car to kill the cat, and have it too guilt ridden to
operate..."
"We
know the plan, boss, it just had good brakes.
They took the cat with 'em."
Crain seemed to have calmed down a little.
"At least it kept Knight and that car out of our hair for a while
..."

"When
this is all over, I'll take you out to dinner at a fancy restaurant,"
Michael said.
Leia smiled.
"Thanks, Michael, but it's okay."
"I'd
really like to."
"Thanks,
but I-"
Michael paused. "... Okay, so you're not interested, I can take a
hint."
"It's
not that, Michael."
"It's
okay, really." He tried to
hide his damaged ego.
"Michael,
it's not that I'm-"
"I
can take a hint," Michael said, a tad angry.
"You're not interested in me. Fine."
"I'm
not interested in men, period."
"O
... oh...."
There was a pause before Leia spoke.
"Eleanor's much more than just a friend."
"...Oh..."
"Can
we pull into that gas station over there? I
need to go to the Ladies."
"Uh,
sure."
KITT swerved into the service station as Leia
headed for the toilet.
"Watch
her."
"Already
am, Michael."
Leia came out shortly after and entered the
service station shop.
"What's
she getting?" Michael asked.
"Chocolate
bars."
A short pause followed.
"Michael,
I noticed a change in your attitude toward Leia."
"Well
... she ..."
"Michael,
I'm ashamed of you!" KITT scalded.
"Kitt,
it's not ... normal."
"I
don't understand."
"Well,
men and women are supposed to be together ... That's the way it is."
"So
they can propagate the species. That I understand, but what is so wrong about two-"
"It's
not natural ..."
"So
you're telling me that love isn't natural, right or normal?"
"N,
but-"
"Love
between two people is special, regardless of gender, despite societies
misgivings."
Michael smiled. "Kitt you never cease to amaze me. You're right. Spank
me ... Just that I've never met a gay person before."
"I'd
be willing to wager you have, just that you haven't known it."
"Probably
right. Kitt, your logic's
impeccable."
"Of
course."
Michael smiled.
"Although,
Kitt, would you go with a male or female car like you?"
"Let's
not get hypothetical, Michael. There are no cars like me, bar KARR and I'm hardly going to
fall in love with him and it's nothing to do with his gender - and we're not
really male in the human sense of the word.
On the other hand if there were other cars like me, it depends on their
personality."
"Okay,
forget it..."
KITT seemed to smile.
"It's
a pity though, she sure is pretty."
"Michael,
is that all you think about?"
"Kitt,
if you met a gorgeous De Lorean, alive like you, wouldn't you-"
"I
see your point, but Leia isn't the only woman you've had headlights for..."
Michael couldn't help but smile.
"Kitt you'll never understand ..."
"Neither
would you if I went out with a sexy sports car every other week."
Michael chuckled. "Kitt, don't ever change."
"I
don't intend to."
He opened his door when he saw Leia returning.
"I
want to apologize for before," Michael said as she climbed in.
"It's just that I've never met a ..."
Leia smiled.
"You can say the word. It's
not taboo."
"...Lesbian
before"
"Chances
are you have hand hadn't known it."
"That's
what KITT said."
"Smart
car."
Michael could definitely see KITT smile that
time!
"I've
got something in that old warehouse over there.
I'm picking up the same wrist watch communicator signal the two men used
- the ones that threw the kitten-" KITT stopped.
"There are three of them in there.
Two male, one female."
"Kitt,
you're incredible."
"Thank
you, but there's more."
Leia looked worried. "I hope they haven't hurt her. Maybe I should give them the formula ..."
"We
ain't licked yet," Michael said.
"We
can't just barge in there, Michael," KITT said.
"That'd put Eleanor in danger."
"I'll
go in," Leia said. "I can
pretend I'm gonna give them the formula."
"It's
too dangerous."
Leia smiled.
"Chivalry, Michael?"
He gave a smile. "I'd've said the same thing if you were a guy."
"It
may be the only way, Michael" KITT said.
"They know who you are."
Knight gave a reluctant nod.
"I'll be right behind you," he said.
"All
right."
"Park
me over there," KITT said, indicating an empty spot across the road.
"Can
you unlock the back door from there?"
"Can
a dolphin swim?"
Michael smiled as he and Leia snuck around back.
Leia took a deep breath, waited until KITT had done his stuff and entered
the warehouse.
Two men spun around and so did their guns.
"So
..." Sid sneered. "You've
finally come to your senses."
"Eleanor's
life is more important than this stuff."
Sid held out his hand.
"The formula."
"Where's
Eleanor?"
"Where's
the formula?"
Leia shook her head. "Not until I know she's safe."
"Fire
Tech Research Labs. Now give me the
damned formula!"
"You
got that, KITT?" Michael asked through his wired wristwatch.
"Sure
have."
Knight smiled.
There wasn't anything he couldn't depend on KITT for.
"We won't be long."
Leia reached into her pocket and pulled out a
vial.
"Here,"
she said, flinching as she handed it to him.
"Good
girl." Sid smiled, hardly pleasantly.
"I
want to see my sister," Leia demanded.
"All
in good time."
Leia had expected that, but she held her ground
as she saw Michael approaching the male and female guard from behind.
He tapped the male on the shoulder, then punched him when he turned and
took out the woman with another well placed punch.
Leia made quick work of Sid with a karate style
kick, and saved the vial.
"That
was close ... I hope Eleanor's okay ..."
"Looks
like they purposely set up here to divert us..."
Together they ran to KITT who had driven right
up to the entrance to meet them.
"Hurry,
Kitt, we don't have much time," Leia said, out of breath.
"You
don't need to tell me twice."
KITT sped down the road and went into Silent
Mode as they approached their destination.
"There
are four guards, two back, the others front.
Crain and an incapacitated female. Don't
Worry, Leia, apart from stress, she's fine.
I'll distract the two front guards while you and Leia go around
back."
"Yes,
Sir," Michael said with a smile and he shot off with Leia.
He wasn't too thrilled about them splitting up,
but knew they had no choice.
KITT waited until his scanners picked up two
unconscious guards, before he backed up a little and pulled up in front of Fire
Tech Labs.
"Well
hello boys ..." A sexy voice emanated from KITT.
He slowly opened his door, revealing an
extremely scantily clad lady in red, courtesy of Bonnie's new holo projector.
The two guards almost dropped their guns.
"Uhh
... hello Miss ... but this is a private property ..."
The 'woman' looked upset.
"Ohh, but I need my engine checked.
My car broke down and like I gotta get to my best friend's party."
The hologram revealed more leg.
Needless to say the guards were mesmerised,
hormone levels rising as they walked toward her.
"Can't
hurt to take a look."
"Ohh
thanks, you're a doll. I'm Stacey
Vermont. Who might you be?"
"Jay
..."
Close enough now, KITT released a sonic squeal,
rendering both guards unconscious, the hologram blowing them both a kiss as KITT
made her disappear.
"Men
can be so shallow."
Michael and Leia were well aware that entering
the Labs was the easy part. He was
impressed at how Leia handled the situation, despite her fears for her friend.
Leia crept down to the base lab.
"Crain."
He jerked slightly, then turned to face her and
smiled.
"Not
bad at all, Miss Bond."
Leia gave a fake smile.
"So
you've decide to part with your beloved formula ..."
"It's
not worth losing Eleanor."
"Oh,
how touching. Your lover."
Leia refused to take the bait.
"Tell
me something... Who's hubby and who's wife?"
"We're
both equal ... Like you care ... Here."
She pulled out a clear Perspex vial.
Crain smiled.
"Excellent, my dear."
Leia looked concerned.
"What are you going to do with it?"
"Oh
nothing, perhaps I'll use it to collect a hefty nest egg... or destroy-"
"Destroy
...Destroy what?..."
His smile quirked. "Whatever I want ... You see I saw your Father's design
blueprints for this stuff before he hid them and I know what this stuff can do
... I could even use it to mass produce diamonds ... gold..."
"Just
like an ordinary greedy-"
"Watch
it now, I still have your lady love."
Leia hid her fears.
Crain opened the vial.
"Just to be sure you're not tryin' ta pull a wangle..."
he sniffed it, and a moment later, reeled backwards.
The next thing he knew he was hit on the back of his head and thought
he'd been clubbed. He'd fallen and
hit his head on the floor, before he lost consciousness.
Leia left him where he fell and raced out of the
lab.
"Ellie!"
she yelled, relieved when she heard her love call her name.
Leia rushed to her, tied to a chair and gagged
and blindfolded.
"Not
so fast..."
Leia spun and tackled the thug, one that would
have been highly illegal in a football game, but here rules didn't exist.
Leia approached her mate and produced a dagger
from her breasts.
Michael had come to the door and needless to say
was quite impressed.
Leia slashed the ropes, gag and blindfold,
looking contrite at the redness they had left on Eleanor's skin.
"Ohh
Leia ..."
Leia held her as she shakily stood.
"Thank
you ..."
"What?
You thought I wouldn't come?"
Eleanor smiled.
"Always
ready to save a damsel in distress."
The other laughed. "You should talk. I
rescued you from your mother once."
"Ahh,
yes ... A fate worse than death."
They both laughed, despite Eleanor's aches and
pains.
"I
hated feeling so helpless," Eleanor spat.
"I'm sorry I'm not as strong as you."
"Ellie,
you're stronger in other ways ..."
Eleanor embraced her and Leia hugged her back.
"Everything's
gonna be all right. I got FLAG to
help us, and they'll clean up those thugs real good."
Michael was about to enter the lab when the two
women shared an intimate kiss. Taken
aback at first, he stood in silence. He'd
never seen two women kiss before, it was quite beautiful.
They looked wonderful together. Michael
knew he shouldn't be watching their display of affection and turned to return to
KITT.
The reunited loved ones joined Michael and KITT
soon enough. The nearing sound of
sirens told them Gerald wouldn't be planning anymore hostile takeovers.
Leia looked at the two men on the ground near
KITT.
"What'd
you do?"
"It's
amazing what a scantily clad hologram can do," KITT said.
"Heterosexuals
..." Leia said, shaking her head, then turned to Michael.
"Present company accepted of course."
Michael couldn't help but smile.
Leia and Eleanor shared a short kiss before
climbing into KITT.

"So
Michael, Kitt, Leia - you managed to save Eleanor and yourselves."
"They
sure did," Eleanor said, rubbing KITT's hood.
"I want to thank you, Devon for all FLAG has done."
"I
feel it my duty to inform you that Crain escaped capture."
Both Leia and Eleanor exchanged a worried
glance.
"With
your permission FLAG can relocate you and change your names."
"We'll
make sure they never bother you again, I promise," Bonnie said.
"Thank
you," Leis said. "I
...I've decided to donate my father's formula and research to FLAG."
"We're
extremely grateful, but are you sure?" Devon asked.
"It's a lot to give up."
Leia smiled.
"I've no head for that stuff and I'm sure you can put it to good
use. I keep clinging onto his
formula because it reminds me of him, but I realise I have to let go.
He wanted the formula to help people and you do."
Leia unhitched the Tibetan cylinder around her
neck and handed it to Devon.
"You
had it with you all along?" Michael said in surprise.
Leia nodded.
"It never leaves my sight. The
blueprints are in the bottom."
"Thank
you," Devon said. "I assure you it's in safe hands."
"This
is starting to sound like a James Bond movie," Bonnie said with a smile.
Leia smiled too.
"Mrrreow?..."
"Hello
Pousca!" KITT exclaimed. "I've missed you."
The kitten stretched and came to him, rubbing
against his wheels.
"She
seems to have recovered from her rather harrowing ordeal," Bonne said.
"You're
definitely a cat person, KITT," Eleanor said.
"Or is that a cat car?"
Smiles all round.
Bonnie placed Pousca on KITT's seat and she
began to lick the upholstery, then rub her head against KITT.
"The
feeling's mutual," the Pontiac said.
"I
think she missed you," Bonnie said with a smile.
KITT wished they could see him smile.
"Devon,
can I keep her?"
The question threw the older man, him thinking
KITT would find a suitable home for the kitten...
"Well
... if you and Michael look after her ..."
"And
I'll look after her when they're away," Bonnie offered.
Devon smiled.
"I don't see why not."
"I
should have seen this coming ..." Knight shook his head, but not without a
smile.
Michael, KITT and FLAG helped Leia and Eleanor
move.
"You
really love her don't you," Michael asked.
"She's
my princess," Eleanor said with a smile.
Leia chuckled.
"I love it when she calls me that..."
* *
*
The dynamic duo returned to the FLAG mobile
unit, after the fourth successful mission in a row, including the rescue of
Eleanor.
All Devon had to do was point.
Michael looked down and grimaced when he saw a little brown mess.
He got down and cleaned up the smelly kitten poop.
"I'll
make it up to you, Michael, I promise," KITT said.
Knight smiled.
"Sure you will." He said, throwing away the dirty tissue.
"You can start by giving me Leia's new address."
"Oh
no," KITT said. "You
can't make me do that."
"Kitt
..."
"She's
unavailable, Michael, and-"
"I
know, Kitt. I just wanna-"
"No,
Michael."
Michael knight slapped his hand over his
stomach. "Y'know, I could do
with one of those roast pontiacs right about now."
"542
West Alamino." KITT's reply
was instant.
Devon and Bonnie shared a look.
"Never
mind," KITT said. He knew
Michael was kidding.
"Don't
worry, Kitt. I just wanna see how
they're settling into their new place."
"All
right."
A tiny meow was heard.
"You
wanna come too?" KITT asked. "All right, but keep your paws inside the vehicle at all
times."
Bonnie, Devon and Michael smiled as Pousca
managed to claw up to KITT's passenger seat all on her own.
Michael gave her a gentle rub as he took KITT out of the FLAG mobile
unit, the sunlight shining of KITT's shining black frame, en route to Leia and
Eleanor's new abode.
As KITT drove, Pousca stretched leisurely,
stood, then began clawing his upholstery.
"Uhh,
Kitt, you want me to stop her doin' that?"
"No,
it's all right, Michael..." KITT chuckled softly.
"It tickles."
