K.I.T.T.’S KNIGHT

“Michael, are you sure this is the right address?” KITT asked.

“Are you questioning my navigational abilities?”

“Very funny.  What I’m saying is the place looks a little, how shall we say, somewhat dodgy?”

  “I’m aware of that…”

Michael exited the car.

A rusty haired woman opened the door.  “Michael …”

  “Hello Titania.”

  “I’m glad you found me.”

  “So am I.”

She placed her arms around him.

“I’m takin' you away from here,” Knight said.

  “Michael, I can’t …I have to stay … I … owe them money…”

“FLAG can take care of that and their dirty money… Come with me and Kitt.”

Titania managed a smile.  “I missed Kitt.”

“That’s nice to know,” KITT said.

“It’ll be all right, I promise you,” Michael said.

Titania sighed.  “All right, I’ll just get Doggie.”

“A dog?” KITT said.  “Oh no.”

Titania smiled as she went back inside, returning with a long multicoloured  striped plush dog.

  “Thank goodness,” KITT said.

Titania chuckled.  “I promise he won’t wet on your seat.”

“All right, he can come,” KITT said.

“How long have you had that thing?” Michael asked.

“I got him for my fifth birthday.  I can’t sleep without him. He turned twenty six today .”

  “Happy Birthday,” KITT said.

  “For me or my dog?”

  “Both of you.”

Michael smiled.

“Michael, I’m detecting a vehicle approaching at high speed.”

  “Get in!”

Michael and Titania climbed into the black Trans Am.  KITT sped off.

  “They’re giving chase, Michael.”

   “Surprise, surprise…”

He switched to Pursuit Mode, losing the crims in the night.

“We lost 'em,” one of then said over the car phone.

“Never mind,” came a sinister voice.  We’ll get him good next time.”

The crims in the car smiled.

“We lost them, Michael,” KITT said.

  “Good ‘ol Kitt!”

“I’m not old thank I you very much.”

Michael laughed.

“For your information, I’m only three years, two days, and…”

  “KITT,” Michael said, “shut up.”

“Don’t tell him to shut up,” Titania scalded, with a smile.  “Go on, Kitt.”

  “Ohh I like her, Michael.”

Titania giggled.  Michael smiled.

“I was about to say fifteen hours, twenty one minutes and three seconds.  Four, five.”

“Kitt if you’re only three years and two days old then you’re a baby.”

  “Shut up, Michael.”

Michael was mildly amused that Titania did not rouse KITT for chastising him.

The three arrived at FLAG Headquarters.

  “I’m glad to see you’re all right, Michael .. Titania … what a surprise…”

  “Hello, Devon.”

  Devon, she needs our protection.”

  “Very well.”

“I can’t thank you all enough.”
Titania kissed KITT’s voice box.  “You too, Kitt.”

   “My pleasure.”

  “Don’t I get a kiss?” Michael said.

Titania smiled as she kissed his cheek.

“Thanks for taking me shopping, Kitt,” Titania said.

“Normally I don’t go anywhere without Michael, but he’s not usually a morning person.”

“Neither am I … Just with all that’s going on …”

“I know.  But we will protect you, I promise.”

  “Thanks, Kitt.”

   “It’s my pleasure.”

“You sure you don’t mind waiting?”

“No, of course not,” KITT said pleasantly.  “I’m sure there’s a pretty sports car I can chat up.”

Titania giggled.  “I’ll be back in around half an hour.”

  “Have fun. I’ll be waiting.”

  “Thanks, Kitt.”

The human rushed into the shopping centre to do her shopping.  She made sure she got everything on her list including a can of high grade oil for KITT.

She emerged later and KITT pulled up by the entrance.

  “Thank you, Kitt.”

“No problem.”  He popped his trunk for her as she placed her bags of shopping inside.  “I got you some oil.”

“Thank you, but you shouldn’t have.”

“It was my pleasure, Kitt, I wanted to.”

She kissed his hood.

“I’ve heard of *guys* being in love with their cars…” A passer by said.

Titania just smiled as she climbed into KITT.

“Kitt,” she asked, “when you run low on fuel, do you get hungry?”

“I don’t know if I can describe it as hungry, but I do feel a sensation of emptiness.”

“That’s sort of what it feels like to be hungry.”

As they drove back, KITT ran through a muddy patch wet with the recent rains.  Wet earth splashed everywhere.

  “Dang it,” KITT said.

  “I’m sorry, Kitt,” Titania said.

“It’s not your fault.  Look there’s a car wash up ahead.  No sweat.”

“It’s all right, Kitt, I’ll wash you.”

  “You sure?  I’m very fussy.”

Titania chuckled.  “I’ll bet you are.  Don’t worry, I’ll do a good job.”

  “I’m sure you will.”

“Kitt, I could swear you’re smiling.”

The car’s redlight scanner tracked back and forth as he drove back to Flag Headquarters.

Upon arriving, Titania unloaded her shopping.

  “Kitt I’m so sorry…”

“No point in crying over spilled milk – literally and look most of it spilled in the bag.”

“Thank goodness, I’ll clean the other up along with thee rest of you.”

  “I can’t wait.”

Titania smiled as she hurried inside with her shopping and placed it in her temporary room.

The lady emerged with pail full of warm soapy water and a large sponge.

  “You ready?”

  “More than I’ll ever be.”

Titania placed the sponge on KITT’s roof and began to wash him.  She then began to wash his hood in a circular motion.

“Ohh that does feel good,” KITT said when she ran the sponge along his side.  The young woman smiled as she began to wash the mud from KITT’s body in the late morning sun.

Michael was about to emerge with half a mind to tell KITT off, but stopped dead in his tracks when he saw Titania bending over him, washing him gently and smiling.

Devon,” he said, “did you ever see someone having so much fun washing a car?”

“Never,” the older man said, “I dare say it’s the first time KITT’s been washed in such a fashion.  Bonnie has always used the laser wash out in the back.”

“She’s practically massaging him … You mean KITT’s enjoying it too?”

  “I’m sure of it.”

Michael shook his head, but not without a smile.  He returned inside, watching from the window.

“I’ve got to tell you, Titania, this is the first time I’ve been cleansed in such a manner.  The sensation is quite invigorating.”

The young woman smiled.  “I’m glad.”  Gently she kissed his hood.

“Usually Michael gets all the kisses.”

Titania giggled.  “Truth be known, Kitt, I’ve always been more comfortable with machines rather than humans.  My favourite show is the Transformers.”

“Intriguing show.  I rather like Optimus Prime.”

“So compassionate isn’t he?  He’s my favourite hero, next to you of course.”

“Shucks.  I’d love to see Optimus Prime Turbo Boost.”

  “So would I, Kitt.”

Titania ran the hose pipe over him washing the suds from his sleek body,

  “Let me get a towel.”

“The sun is warm today, but if you insist.”

  “I do.”

  “Good.”

Titania left returned with a towel and began to rub KITT dry.

“Is she doin’ what I thin she’s doin’?” Michael asked form inside the building.

“I believe she’s drying Kitt,” Devon said.

  “That’s what I thought.”

“Your hands are like Bonnie’s,” KITT said, “in other words, exquisite.”

“Thank you, Kitt,” Titania said as she finished drying him.

“Thank you for the wash and the oil,” KITT said.

“My pleasure, Kitt.” She patted his hood.

Titania returned inside to unpack her shopping.

Michael emerged and tried to be angry with KITT.  “Just what do you think you’re doin’?”

  “Good morning to you too.”

  “Good morning…”

  “You want an answer?”

  “Yes.”

“I took Miss Berry shopping.  Is that a crime?”

  “Without me.”

“You were asleep.  I didn’t want to wake you. I ‘m sorry if I hurt your feelings, Michael.”

  “Kitt, something coulda happened.”

“It was ten minutes down the road.  The worst that happened was that I got dirty and some chocolate flavoured rice milk spilled in my trunk.”

“I see she gave you a wash.”

“Did she ever.  I’ve never had such an invigorating wash.”

“Bonnie’s laser wash doesn’t do it for you?”

  “Not any more.”

Knight chuckled.  “Sorry, Buddy, I’m just not used to you goin’ off without me.”

“That’s okay, Michael, you’re not still mad are you?”

  “Kitt I wasn’t mad, just…”

  “You’re not *jealous* are you?”

“Of course not, but I think you’re forming a psychological attraction to her.”

“You think so? … So do I…”

Ron Golds looked at his men Anderson and Holman.

“Take this.  Out of action you hear me.  Then it will be a cinch …”

He handed Anderson a small weapon.

  “See you get it done.”

  “Yes, Boss.”

Michael, KITT and Titania sped along the highway.

“You say that Ron Golds lives at 1524 Grange Drive?”

  “That’s his mansion.” Titania said

“Paid with by dirty money, no doubt.”

  “No doubt,” KITT said.

“And you owe him fifteen thousand?” Michael said to Titania

She nodded.

“Why’d you borrow from a creep like that?”

“I needed the money.  He gave me a credit card, said I didn’t have to pay the money back.”

  “And you believed him?”

  “I was young and foolish.”

“But that was only three months ago, according to the credit statement,” KITT said.

  “I learn fast.”

“They’re coming,” Holman said.  “Get ready.”

“I am,” Anderson aimed the weapon.

“Michael there’s a stationary vehicle up ahead, with two I dare say suspicious looking fellows inside.”

“Looks like Golds sent his dogs after us.”

“That’ll be Anderson and Holman,” Titania said.  “He sent those thugs around to make me pay when I couldn’t … I could barely sleep at night … I ..

“Don’t worry, Titania, we’ll get those thugs and Golds too,” KITT promised.

“Thanks, to be able to live without fear for your life is something most take for granted.”

“Michael, they’re opening a window and they’re armed.”

  “Shouldn’t be a problem.”

“Michael that’s not a gun … it looks like gun, but…”

Knight skidded KITT to a halt.

“Now!” Anderson shouted as he fired the weapon, hitting KITT’s hood.

  “Nothing happened!” Holman yelled.

“So much for their weapon,” Michael said.  “Kitt, you okay?”

“I felt a little jolt, but apart form that, nothing.”

  “Then let’s get ‘em!”

  “Well said, Michael.”

KITT drove on, then stopped suddenly.    “Michael wait … something’s happening to me … We have to get back to Headquarters … whatever that weapon did it did something…”

  “Kitt?”

“We have to go back..” KITT insisted.  “I know you’re disappointed, as am I.”

“All right …” Michael said.  “You okay?”

  “I’m not sure.”

KITT turned around.

“They’re leaving ... maybe that weapon did something after all.  Let’s get back to Golds.”

KITT returned to the parking area of FLAG Headquarters.

“You two, get out of me, now!”

  “Kitt?” Michael enquired.

  “Out!” KITT said, desperately.

Michael and Titania hurried out of him.  Titania looked at him worriedly.

“Run!” KITT yelled.  “I might explode!”

Titania looked horrified.  “Kitt?”

Michael grabbed her and ran, though he too was worried for KITT.  A bright flash followed.  Michael and Titania stared, dumbfounded, but grateful KITT did not explode.

KITT looked at himself.  “My goodness … I’m … I’m human …”

  “Kitt?”

The ex-Trans AM looked up.  “Yes, Michael, it’s me.”

He had the same voice.  Michael helped him up.

Titania looked at him worriedly.  “Are you alright?  You’re not hurt?”

“I can’t scan my vitals obviously, but I feel no pain.”

“Well this is a surprise,” Knight said.

“You’re tellin’ me.” KITT said.  “Why would they do this …” he paused.  “It’s to get to you, Michael.  They obviously wanted me out of the way …”

“But turning you into a human?  Don’t you think that’s a little extreme?”

“Who can understand the criminal mind, Michael?”

  “Too true, Buddy, too true.”

Titania took KITT’s hand.  “Are you sure you’re all right?”

KITT nodded.  “A little shaken, but otherwise, functional.”

The young woman smiled.

“Let’s get inside,” KITT said.  “We’re all vulnerable out here and I can’t protect you like this.”

Devon and Bonnie were intrigued to see another man with Michael and Titania.

“And who pray tell are you?”

This pray tell is Kitt,” Michael said.

Devon and Bonnie stared.  “What did you say?”

“It’s true Devon, those crims’ weapon turned me into a human, Heaven knows how.”

Bonnie’s eyes were wise as plates.

“The question is how am I going to turn back?”

  “Kitt?” Bonnie said.

“Yes, Bonnie, it really is me.”

She took his hand.  “Are you hurt?”

“No, but I’m still trying to adjust to my new body.  Let us hope we can get the weapon so you can change me back.”

“I still don’t understand how this happened.”

“I do,” Devon said.  “Terrance Smithson.”

“Terrance...” Bonnie said.  “Can you be sure it was him?”

“Wait a minute, who’s this Terrance guy?” Michael asked.  “Are you tellin’ me we have another bad guy to deal with?”

“I’m afraid so, Michael.  And to answer your question, Terrance was Chief FLAG technician before Bonnie.  He was caught stealing sensitive parts and selling them to the criminal underworld. He worked on KITT shortly before he was fired.  He’s the only one besides Bonnie and April who knows KITT inside and out and I highly doubt April would have harmed Kitt. She’s been on good terms with FLAG ever since she left a year ago.”

Michael nodded.  “So Terrance it is then.  Kitt, how you feeling.”

“I feel like I’m outta gas.  I believe I’m hungry.”

“No problem,” Michael said.  “I’ll take you to a burger joint.”

“Thank you, Michael, but the thought of consuming something that was once living is beyond me.”

  “Don’t tell me you’re vegetarian.”

  “I believe I am.”

“Vegetables are alive too you know.”

“Very funny.  You know as well as I do there’s a difference.”

Michael smiled.

“I’ll fix you something,” Titania said.

She took KITT off to the FLAG kitchen.

“You don’t have to go to a lot of trouble.”

  “It’s no trouble, Kitt.”

  “I’m afraid I can’t help you.  I wasn’t programmed to cook.”

Titania smiled.  “Neither was I.”

  “Oh no,” KITT said.

Titania laughed.  KITT smiled as he helped her peel the potatoes.

Titania fussed over desert and while KITT politely ate his dinner.  “Not bad for someone who isn’t programmed to cook.”

“Thanks, Kitt, but save room for desert.”

“Thank you, but you don’t have to go to so much trouble.”

   “It’s no trouble, KITT.”

She brought out some chocolate mousse.

KITT sampled it.  “Mmm…. This does taste good.”

  “I’m glad.”

KITT finished his chocolate mouse.  Titania handed him a piece of milk chocolate.  “Thank you … Delicious … I never understood the appeal of it until now …”

Titania smiled.  “I’m glad.”

KITT stood and helped Titania wash up.  “Thank you, KITT.”

“My pleasure,” he said, taking her hand.

The two drew closer together for a moment, and they kissed gently.

They parted a while later.  KITT opened his eyes and stared into Titania’s.

“I’ve … never experienced anything … like that before …”

The two kissed again.

This time Bonnie saw.  Part of her felt a little upset, the other ecstatic for KITT and she left them be.

KITT placed his arms around Titania and held her.

“So KITT,” Michael said.  “What’s the worst thing about being human?”

“Well I can’t Turbo Boost and the less said about human biological functions the better.”

Michael smiled.

“But truly, the worst thing is I can’t do my job … I can’t protect you, Michael.  I’m sure you noticed but in this mode I don’t have my molecular bondage shell.”

“Kitt, you can’t help it.  You don’t like being human?”

“On the contrary.  It’s very interesting.”

 “So what’s the best thing?”

KITT smiled.  “I can smile, Michael.”

“But you’ve smiled before, I sensed it.”

“But you couldn’t see it.  It’s a wonderful thing to be able to smile, Michael.  And I finally know what chocolate tastes like.”

Michael smiled.

  “And look … I have hands … I can hold her…”

  “Kitt?”

“She kissed me last night, Michael.”

  “Kissed you?”

“I’ve never experienced anything like it before … It was ...  it was wonderful...”

  “Kitt …” Michael cautioned.  “I don’t think-“

Michael .. Is that it?  You’re jealous because I have the girl for a change?”

“No, Kitt, it’s not that.  Just be careful okay, I don’t want you to get hurt.  You may be human now, but-“

“Michael she fell in love with me when I was a car.”

“Ordinarily girls don’t fall in love with cars.”

  “Titania is no ordinary girl.”

Michael took KITT’s hand.  “Just be careful, Buddy.”

KITT slept that night, but it was not soundly.  He woke up at 3am.  Michael entered the room.  “Somehow I get you’re not sleeping.”

“Michael sometimes I swear you have a sixth sense.”

Michael smiled.  “Kitt, you okay?”

“That’s just it, Michael, my dilemma.  Am I Kitt?”

  “What do you mean?”

“In this mode I’m not the Knight Industries Two Thousand, so I ask again, am I Kitt?”

“What do you think?  You may not be a car right now, but you’re still my buddy and you’re still my partner.”

“Thank you, Michael, and you’re still mine.”

“And Kitt, I can’t imagine you with a human name.  David?  Bruce?”

“I think I’ll stick with Kitt, thank you, Michael.”

  “Glad to hear it.”

KITT and Titania spent the following day together, playing, sharing stories and talking.

At dusk, Titania and KITT strolled along the beach.

“Usually I hate salt water,” KITT said, “but it’s really not so bad.”

Titania smiled.  “It can’t mess with your circuits when you’re human.”

KITT smiled and held her.

The waves rolled on the sand.  KITT jumped away. Titania laughed.

  “Let the water touch you.”

 “Are you sure?”

She nodded and KITT let the next wave touch his bare feet.

  “It’s cold!” he exclaimed.

  “You’ll get used to it.”

  “I will?”

  “Trust me.”

KITT let the next wave weave around his ankles, and the next one.

“You’re right, it doesn’t seem so cold anymore, but the temperature has not changed.”

  “Come in…”

  “You must be joking.”

Titania shook her head.  “It’ll only take a few minutes to get used to it.  I’ll race you in.  No Turbo Boosting.”

Kitt laughed.  “Very funny.”

Titania began to run into the water in her shorts and t-shirt.  KITT shook his head and went in after her.  The young woman plunged into an oncoming wave.  The wave hit KITT.

“As I heard Michael say once ‘Shit! It’s cold!’”

Titania laughed.  “You’ll get used to it.”

  “I certainly hope so.”

It took a few minutes for their bodies to become accustomed to the water.

“You’re right,” KITT said.  “It’s invigorating.”

The two held each other in the water and kissed, unaware they were being watched.  KITT swam with Titania with the waves.

“Who would have thought swimming in saline water could be so enjoyable.”

“It’s more enjoyable when you can play with someone.” Titania splashed KITT.  He chuckled and splashed her back.  She swam away from him, but he leapt into a wave and caught her.

“See you can still Turbo Boost.”

KITT laughed and kissed her.

The watcher left.

KITT and Titania continued to walk along the beach, eating ginger ice creams.

KITT swallowed the last of his ice cold treat.

“I’ve really had fun today, thank you” he said.

“Thank *you,* Kitt, I’ve had fun today too, the most fun I’ve had in a long time.”

KITT placed his arms around her and kissed her gently.

When they returned to FLAG Headquarters, the two shared another kiss before seeking some privacy.  Gently their innocent hands began to explore.

“Forgive me, I’ve never done this before,” KITT said.

  “Neither have I,” Titania admitted.

KITT held her in his gentle arms.

*   *   *

“Kitt you look positively radiant,” Michael said.  “Oh my God, tell me you didn’t.”

“No, Michael, we didn’t.  We spent the day and night together.”

“I saw you two at the beach.”

  “You were *spying* on us?”

“I just wanted to see if you were all right.”

  “Michael you’re not my mother.”

Knight laughed.  “No, I’m not.”

“I guess Bonnie is the closest person I have to a mother, she designed my circuitry, she made me come alive.”

Knight nodded.  “Sorry, Kitt, I didn’t mean to spy on you … just that I was a little worried…”

“Anyway, Michael, if you must know we didn’t do anything but hold one and other and it was truly wonderful.

“Kitt, you’re incredible.  You didn’t do it and you look like you’re on cloud nine.”

“With a silver lining,” KITT added with a smile.  “Thanks, Michael.”

Kitt fixed himself something to eat.

“Wait a minute,” Michael said.  “Who’s been into my licorice?”

“I have, Michael, and believe me it’s all yours.  It’s quite revolting.”

  “Each to his own.”

“Are you meaning to tell me that different humans have different taste buds?”

  “Something like that.”

“And you didn’t tell me that bathing was so invigorating.”

“I guess I’m just used to it.”

Kitt finished the remainder of his sandwich.

”Now it’s back on duty.”

“I don’t know what use I can be, Devon,” KITT said.  “I can hardly do anything in human mode.”

  “Hey!” Michael exclaimed.

“No offence, Michael” KITT said.  “But I feel naked without my molecular bondage shell, so vulnerable.”

Titania took his hand.

“Thank you,” KITT said, grateful to her comfort.

“You’re not as useless as you might think, Kitt,” Michael said.  “They don’t know what happened to you.  As far as they know you malfunctioned.  They’ve never seen you as a human before.”

“Michael are you suggesting I go undercover?”

  “That’s exactly what I’m suggesting.”

“Now you’re talking, but what if they discover me?”

“That’s a risk all spies have to take.”

KITT nodded.  “This is very awkward for me.”

“We need you to bring back the weapon they used, and the schematics for it that way Bonnie may be able to change you back.”

“It feels strange to be going on a solo mission,” KITT said, but they’ll recognise you and Titania.”

“We have a hire car, Kitt, but-“

“A hire car … how embarrassing.”

“Kitt, are you sure you can…”

  “I *can* drive, Michael.”

  “Oh, Good.”

  “I’m not totally useless.”

Knight smiled.  “Glad to hear it, Buddy.  Be careful.”

  “Believe me, I will.”

“Michael, in the event that I don’t return, take care of yourself and Titania.”

  “Kitt…”

Titania threw her arms around him.  KITT held her gently and kissed her softly.

KITT climbed into the car and drove off.  “At least it’s black,” he said.

Knight chuckled as KITT drove off.

KITT pulled up in front of Golds’ mansion.  "Hire cars ... " he muttered to himself.

“Boss there’s a car pullin’ up in the driveway.”

  “Knight?”

“Nup, someone else. Do you wan’ us to get rid of ‘im?” Holman asked.

“No, I want to find out who he is first...“

KITT was grabbed at the door and frisked.

“I beg your pardon, is that any way to treat a guest?”

  “Mr Golds orders.”

  “He’s clean,” Anderson said.

“Thank you,” KITT said as they took him upstairs.

Golds pointed a gun at him.  “Who are you?”

“David Bruce,” KITT lied.  “And I can help you get Michael Knight.”

Golds lowered his gun.  “Go on,” he said.  “I’m interested, but I still have no idea who you are.”

“Let me just say Knight and I go waaay back.”

*    *    *

“I’m so worried about Kitt,” Titania said.

“Me too, but he can take care of himself,” Michael said.  //I hope.//

Devon made some tea for them.

 *    *    *

A fourth man emerged, KITT recognised him instantly as Terrance Smithson.

  “Hello, Kitt,” he said.

Kitt blinked.  “Excuse me?”

“I designed that weapon that turned you human. So I ascertained pretty much exactly what you’d look like.”

Golds pointed his gun at KITT.  The ex Trans-Am stiffened.

“He’s right, Knight and him go way back.”

“Why go to all the trouble to change me into a human?” KITT asked.

“As Devon might have told you, I have a flare for the dramatic.”

“So it seems.  Thank you. It’s been an intriguing experience for the most part.”

Terrance smiled, but it was not a pleasant one.  “Glad you enjoyed it.”

“So,” Golds said over the FLAG computer, if you don’t come to the parking lot on Golina and Main, you won’t have a partner anymore.

“It’s a trap, Michael!” KITT yelled, tied up.

The screen went dead.

“No, Kitt…” Titania covered her mouth and tears brimmed in her eyes.  Bonnie comforted her, equally worried.

“I’m goin’ after Kitt.” Michael said.

“I understand, Michael,” Devon said, but be careful.”

“I will be.  Kitt’s life is at stake.”

“I’m coming with you,” Titania insisted.

“No you’re not, no point in risking both our lives.”

Michael hoped into another hire car.  “This sure isn’t Kitt, but it’ll have to do.”

“Michael please take me with you” Titania begged, but Michael he left in a hurry.  Devon took her hand, but she knew this time the older mans exquisite teas would not calm her down.

Michael arrived at the parking lot and untied KITT.

  “It’s a trap, Michael.”

  “I know, buddy.”

“Thank you for coming.  I feel so useless.”

“You’re not useless, Buddy, not to me or your friends.”

  “Thank you, Michael.”

  “How touching,” came Golds’ voice.

KITT jerked a hand free and punched him.   Michael and Kitt ran toward the car.  Golds fired after them.

“You’re dead, Knight!”  He fired at the car, almost hitting Michael.

Michael turned around, defeated.  Golds pointed his gun at him and smiled as he began to pull back on the trigger.

  “Michael!”

KITT threw himself in front of his friend, taking three bullets.

  “KITT!!!” Michael screamed.

Golds cursed as his gun was now empty.

Michael knelt down to KITT.

  “Kitt … No … Kitt …”

  “Mi… chael..”

  “Kitt … Why did you…”

“I’m programmed to protect you, Michael.”

“But you’re human now, Kitt, you’re not programmed to do anything.”

  “You’re my friend, Michael and I can't let you die … I … I love you.”

“I love you too, Buddy …”

“But it’s different from my love for Titania…”

“There are different types of love, Kitt, bow let me get you outta here.”

“Michael, leave me, I’m done for.”

“Kitt, I lost one partner in a parking lot, I’m sure as Hades not gonna lose another!”  Michael picked up KITT and carried him to a payphone and dialled 911 for an ambulance.

Michael held KITT’s hand before he went into have the bullets removed. Titania and Bonnie had tears in their eyes.

“Hey … I’m not dead,” KITT said.  “Not yet.”

“Ohh, Kitt …” Titania kissed his cheek.

The doctors wheeled KITT away.

Titania dropped the papers she was carrying.  “What’s that..”

“The schematics for that weapon,” she said.

“How did you get … you went anyway …”

“I had to do something … The cops got Holman, Anderson and Smithson.”

“That’s good, but Golds got away.”

“Does it matter?  I mean Kitt’s … I’m sorry … of course it matters … I’m just so worried about Kitt.”

“So am I, Titania … So am I.”  Gently, Michael held her.  “We’ll get Golds, I promise you.”

Hours later the doctor emerged.  Titania and Michael stood up worriedly.

“Your friend is very lucky,” he said.  “All three bullets missed his vital organs, and narrowly missed his spine.”

Both Knight and Titania breathed a sigh of relief.

“Can we see him?” Titania asked.

  “He’s sleeping at the moment.”

Titania and Michael went to see their friend.

“He looks so peaceful,” she whispered.  “So beautiful…”

Michael smiled, relieved.  “I’m just glad he’s okay.”

They met KITT the following morning, sitting up in his bed, sipping some fresh apple juice.  “Not too much stress now,” the doctor said coming into the room.  “No strenuous activity for at *least* a fortnight.”

“Thank you, you saved my Buddy’s life.”

“It’s my job as well as my pleasure.”  The doctor took Away KITT’s empty breakfast plate.

Michael turned back to KITT.  “Glad to see you’re all right.”

  “So am I, Michael.”

“Don’t you *ever* do that again.”

KITT smiled.  “I will Michael, you know I will.”

Knight smiled at his friend.  “You care too much.”

  “I know.”

Titania placed her arms around KITT and hugged him gently.  “I was so worried…”

KITT wiped her tears away.  “I’m all right,” he assured, kissing her softly.

“You heard the doctor, no strenuous activity.”

KITT smiled.  “I’m not planning to Turbo Boost.”

Titania smiled.  “You may be able to do that sooner than you think.  I got the schematics.”

  “That’s wonderful, but how…”

  “She snuck into Gold’s mansion.”

  “You didn’t!”

Titania nodded.  “You could have been hurt…”

  “Better me than you.”

  “Don’t say that…”

 Gently she hugged him.

Devon and Bonnie called in at the hospital.

“Kitt, so glad to see you’re all right.”

“I’m far from fully functional, but I’m recovering.”

Bonnie placed her arms around him and kissed his cheek.  KITT wiped tears form her face.

“You’ll be happy to know Golds was arrested when he went back to his mansion,” Devon said.  “Charged with attempted murder amongst other illegal activities.”

  “That’s wonderful news,” Bonnie said.

“I’m glad they got the brute.  He almost killed Michael.”

“And he would have if it wasn’t for you.  I can’t thank you enough, Kitt.”

  “Don’t mention it, Partner.”

Titania returned carrying a cup of warm tea for KITT.

“Here, she said, “it’s a herbal blend that I make for my clients.”

  “Clients?” Michael said.

“I had an alternative healing practice before I got messed up with Golds,” Titania said.

“It’s very soothing,” KITT said, drinking the tea.

He set the cup down.  “I’m so tired,” he said.

“Get some rest, Kitt,” Michael said.

KITT placed his head on the pillow and closed his emerald eyes.

“Can we change him back?” Michael said.

“Not while he’s so weak,” Bonnie said.  “The shock to his system will more than likely kill him.  We have to wait until he’s fully recovered.”

Michael sighed.  “He feels so vulnerable…”

“He is,” Bonnie said, “so it’s up to us to make him feel good.”

  “Right on,” Michael said.

Titania, Michael, Bonnie and Devon came to visit KITT in hospital every day.

“I must say, all this attention, and lovely teas remind me to get shot more often.”

Michael chuckled and shook his head, ruffling his partner’s jet black hair.

It was three weeks before KITT had fully recovered and taken home to Flag Headquarters.

“Are you sure it will work, Bonnie?” KITT asked.

“I’m running a test now.”  She put a circuit board on the bench.  “This circuit board should turn into a mouse, if it works correctly, then back into a circuitboard.  Let’s see if it works.”

“I hope it does,” KITT said.

To everyone’s relief, the experiment worked flawlessly.

“Wonderful, Bonnie,” Kitt said.  “You are a technological Goddess.”

She chuckled.  “Thanks, Kitt.  Now for you.”

“Wait a moment,” KITT said as he took Michael’s hand.   “I’ll never be able to do this in automotive form,” he said, shaking his friend’s hand.  Michael and KITT embraced. KITT then he turned to Titania and kissed her.  “Nor that.”

Titania held him for a while.

KITT turned to Bonnie.  “I’m ready.”

The FLAG Technician aimed the device at KITT.

  “Stand back,” KITT said.

Michael and the others stepped back, giving KITT enough room to resume automotive form as Bonnie activated the device.

In a moment KITT was a sleek black Trans Am again.  “Now this is more like it,” KITT said, “not that being human wasn’t a wonderful experience.”

Titania smiled and patted his hood.

  “Kitt you’re you again.”

  “Yes, Titania I’m me.”

“No offence, KITT, but I prefer you as a car.”

  “You do?”

  “Yes, you’re unique.”

  “What about me?” Michael enquired.

  “Ohh you’re unique too, Michael.”

They all laughed.  Kitt’s redlight scanner tracked back and forth.

Kitt met Titania in private while she was packing her things.

“FLAG’s helping me set up my practice all over again and given me a new home.”

  “That’s wonderful.”

“I’ll miss you, KITT… I … I can’t come in between you and Michael, as much as I love you.”

“I love you deeply as well,” KITT said.  “It’s the first time I ever-“

  “Me too, Kitt.”

Gently she stroked his hood and kissed his roof.

“I’ll miss you, so much Kitt.  Will you come to visit?”

  “Of course.”

Gently Titania kissed his sleek black hood.

“But before you leave,” KITT said, “how about a wash and a wax?”

Titania laughed.  “You’re on.”
